The Plot
The show starts with the dragons and Vikings of Berk celebrating another successful harvest. Hiccup, the show’s protagonist, enters riding Toothless, his dragon. Hiccup is excited as this will be the first time he will be taking part in the harvest celebration. However, he is quickly reprimanded by Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s father and the village chief, for being late. Stoick reminds him that he is not yet ready to fight dragons and tells Hiccup to go watch over the eggs in the Dragon Nursery.
Hiccup goes to the Dragon Nursery where he meets Astrid, a Viking girl his age who is helping to take care of the dragon eggs. The two quickly become friends and bond over their shared love of dragons. Suddenly, a loud noise is heard outside and the villagers come running into the nursery in a panic. A dragon has been sighted in Berk!
The Music
How to Train a Dragon: The Musical features an original score by John Powell, who also composed the music for the film. Powell was inspired by traditional Scottish and Irish music when creating the score, as well as by the film’s Viking setting.
